Jiuzhaigou lies at the southern end of Minshan mountain range, 330 km north of the provincial capital of Chengdu and part of Jiuzhaigu County in the Aba Tibetan Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of northwestern Sichuan province. And it stretches over 72,000 hectares (180,000acres). Jiuzhaigou takes its name from the nine Tibetan villages along its length, namely Panxin,Pengbu, Guwa,Heye, Shuzheng, Zechawa. In 1982, Jiuzhaigou became the first national place of interest in China. Jiuzhaigou Valley was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 1992 and a world Biosphere Reserve in 1997. It belongs to the category V (Protected Landscape) in the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) system of protected are categorization.
The tourism area is classified as a AAAAA scenic area by the China National Tourism Administration. Since October 29th 2010, Jiuzhaigou Valley officially became the first national “Wisdom Scenic”.
Jiuzhaigou valley covers 720 km square, with buffer zones covering an additional 600 km square. It is known for its many mutil-level waterfalls, colorful lakes, and snow-capped peaks. Jiuzhaigou is composed of three valleys arranged in a Y shape. The notable features contain, Zechawa Valley, Rize Valley, Shuzheng valley, Long lake, and Zharu Valley. The Rize and Zechawa valleys flow from the south and meet at the center of where they form the Shuzheng valley, flowing north to the mouth of valley.

The natural forest covers nearly 30,000 hectares including many higher and lower plants species, such as pine, spruce, fir, Cheng Chi, Euptelea, and so forth. Its elevation ranges from 2000 to 4000 m. Local fauna includes the endangered giant panda, Sichuan golden monkey, the Sichuan takin and sambar. Jiuzhaigou is also home to nearly 140 bird species.
